I have no idea why, but it is apparently news worthy that a tracked white shark was eaten by some unknown animal. It made CNN, Fox, Yahoo news, and even was posted by a lot of people on Facebook. Facebook, the new news source, and probably more reliable than Fox.
Now, I am a huge fan of the Great White Shark. Sharks in general are fascinating to me, but the great white is in a league of it’s own. We are talking millions of years of evolution. We are talking about one of the greatest predators in the ocean. And yet, something killed a nine-foot long white shark. So everyone is wondering what could have done this.
But the sad part is that it could have been almost anything. We know more about the surface of the moon that we know about our oceans. But in these oceans, we know many things that could kill a great white. Orca’s have been video tapped killing sharks. Squid and octopi have been known to kill sharks… though maybe not great whites. Heck, even great whites are known to eat great whites.
So, while a shark did die, and we don’t know why, it probably isn’t some unknown creature from the deep. I’m not saying it can’t be something new, but the odds are it’s just some regular sea creature. It really is probably something we already know.
However, having said all of this, it is nice to see sharks make news when it isn’t a shark attack. Maybe we can stop demonizing these fascinating creatures.
